Mark Zuckerberg in his keynote address at the F8 conference earlier this year indicated messenger to be a big bet for the company and four months down the lane, the company announce appointment of Anand Chandrasekaran in a strategic role in messenger app.
While, the platform itself is struggling to find acceptance in the Chinese market, and India being one of the most important markets for the social networking platform this move does not come as a surprise.
Anand, who in his previous avatar was Chief Product Officer at Snapdeal an eCommerce major in India. Earlier, Anand was with Yahoo, where he held roles of Sr. Director for Search and Mobile. Prior to Yahoo, Anand was Director of Product at Openwave. Previously, he co-founded Aeroprise Inc. Under Anand’s leadership, Aeroprise became the most-deployed solution worldwide for mobile service management, raised $7M in funding and was acquired by BMC Software.
According, to the a website DMR Facebook messenger has 900 million users as of 21 APR, 2016 and boasts of 11% of the world’s population on its user base.
While brands in India are yet to experiment commercial significance of the Facebook messenger app, this new appointment is definitely a move to watch in the near-term.
